Most of our patients are referred by a neuropsychologist or neurologist who found a possible auditory weakness during a screening test in their office. What Causes Auditory Processing Disorder?Ĭauses of an auditory processing disorder can include chronic middle ear infections, familial history, traumatic brain injury, concussion, cancer treatments How Is Auditory Processing Disorder Diagnosed?Īn auditory processing disorder is diagnosed by an audiologist using a 2-channel audiometer and specific tests that are designed to task the listening system. current or past history of speech delays.current or past history of ear infections.unable to stay focused for long periods when someone is teaching or talking.becoming disinterested or distractable in noisy situations.delayed responses to questions, singing the wrong words to songs. What are the Signs and Symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder? Trouble Understanding SpeechĪn auditory processing disorder can make it difficult to understand speech. This, in turn, allows audiologists to suggest helpful modifications, as well as start the correct therapy to help improve those weaknesses. Once specific weaknesses are identified, the sooner the patient, their family, and teachers can gain some insight into why this person is struggling. Overall, audiologists seek to help the person who comes to the office as best they can. It is possible for auditory processing disorder to coexist with visual processing disorder as well. Auditory processing tests often reveal a correlation between patients who have weaknesses in decoding, and those who struggle to learn to read. Dyslexia, for example, is a type of reading disorder. Sometimes the difficulties someone is experiencing start to make sense once we have taken a comprehensive history and completed the testing. Audiologists try to differentiate between these types of disorders during testing. Many times, people who have an auditory processing disorder also have other disorders, such as attention problems. It is caused by a malfunction or delay in the neural pathways that process sound, and there are different types of APD. APD is not a hearing loss, but a problem with the way the brain processes auditory information. Symptoms of APD can include difficulty following instructions, difficulty with phonetics, and difficulty understanding conversations. They may also have difficulty with verbal memory and discrimination of similar-sounding words. People with APD may struggle to hear and understand speech in noisy environments or when the speaker has an accent or is not speaking clearly. Dr.An auditory processing disorder (APD) is a condition where a person has difficulty understanding and interpreting sounds, even though they have normal hearing. Wouldn't it be great if every child has a team approach to really understand the unique ways they learn? And if every parent, teacher and provider had a clear explanation of how this child's (C)APD interacts with learning, reading, speech and language development? And if they could have a child-specific therapy plan with priorities and exercises for immediate aural rehabilitation that can even start at home? With Dr. (C)APD can occur with peripheral hearing loss, with normal hearing, and may occur alone or concomitant with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and other learning disabilities. Hearing acuity may be normal but the brain in its complex functions cannot make best use of the sound and interpret proper meaning and associations. Auditory Processing Disorder, and Central Auditory Processing Disorder (specific to the Central Auditory Nervous System), occurs when a child or adult hears sound or speech but cannot properly process what was heard. Such an easy cocktail makes for a great margarita to serve up and parties, and the two rimming mixtures I’ve included in the recipe below will appeal to everyone, no matter if they prefer sugar or salt! It makes it so this margarita pairs with a salt OR sugar rim – which is ideal for me since I switch back and forth between wanting some sweet or salty! I love the brightness that the lemon brings to the tequila, and how the agave smooths it all out at the end of every sip. This margarita falls rights into that “fresh” category, but with a lemony twist instead of using lime juice. I’ve actually come to crave them, particularly on those taco nights that I inevitably demand each week… It has been added to with tips, tricks, and FAQs that have come up over the years! The recipe remains unchanged.Įver since then, it’s been all about the fresh margaritas for me. Note: this is an updated version of the original published on February 15, 2018. It had fresh juice, a little raw sugar and tequila. The moment I tasted it, I realized what margaritas were really supposed to be about. However, it took one bar up in chilly Breckenridge with my mom for me to take a gamble on what they called their “fresh” margarita. You know that sour and sweet mix that tastes processed and doesn’t really capture the flavor of what a margarita SHOULD be.Īt the time, most of the margaritas you ordered out were, at least for the classic margaritas. Little ol’ me who didn’t know any better, used to think all margaritas were made with margarita mix. I have to be honest with you… Margaritas used to be something that I totally hated… I know, I knowwwwwwww, how could I possibly say a thing like that?! Lemon Agave Margarita about this lemon agave margarita The updated version of Clipse’s “Hot Damn” builds on everything right with the original, just adding more piano and more raps. There are some good songs on the album though. They might be up to hear some Jamaican riddims, but Supercat’s “The Don of Dons” has no dancehall fire and will probably send rude bwoys to the bar for a Red Stripe instead. The Neptunes can certainly produce this sound, but I don’t think it’s one rap fans are keen to hear. The High Speed Scene’s “Fuck N’ Spend” seems grossly out of place on this album. Coldchain’s “Hog” is full of guest stars and built on a beat that seems to be going backwards, musically and in terms of the waning interest you feel listening to it. The Vanessa Marquez “Good Girl” song is generically R&B, from the music to the singer. The Ludacris “It Wasn’t Us” featuring I-20 can get over on the strength of a rap that sounds like “Act a Fool” meets “Rollout,” but the track is full of silly sound effects paired with a track that tries to be Trick Daddy and can’t even be Trina. The misses on this album are all the more glaring as a result. Coming back to back as they do on “Clones,” the songs make a powerful statement – there’s no style of rap track Neptunes can’t attack successfully. On the Clipse track “Blaze of Glory” featuring Ab-Liva, Neptunes go 180 the opposite – heavy on horns, hand claps, and burping bass that scream funk. It’s electronic, obtuse, and has enough boom and pound for Busta to tie it together with his manic energy that makes even a whispered rap seem louder than a thunderstorm. The track is taken down to almost nothing but a set of synthesized drums, but at times a pile of tools seems to clatter to the floor in a cacophony of noise most notably after the first chorus. Busta Rhymes “Light Your Ass on Fire” is one of those Neptunes tracks that’s right for being so wrong, a feeling those who heard DJ Premier and Jeru the Damaja wrecking “Come Clean” to a decade ago can relate to. Which was better? Both were good actually, although as rappers Chad and Pharrell weren’t really as dope as the talent they usually work with.Īs such “The Neptunes Present… Clones” might seem like the perfect marriage – the beats of a red hot hip-hop production duo with some of rap’s best talent, including a lot of artists they’ve already worked with before. They have an inner circle of “Star Trak” artists that get full albums featuring their work, peeps like The Clipse and Kelis, but then you’re just as likely to remember Pharrell’s crooning falsetto on Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U” or their stomping beat on Noreaga’s “Grimey.” Their sound is everywhere, and last year even profiled their self-produced rap debut as N*E*R*D on “In Search Of.” The album was good, but it may have left some people confused – two different versions came out, one with a live band and one with the traditional synthesized Neptunes style and sound. Then again, if you guessed “The Neptunes” for at least one out of any five songs you hear on the radio, odds are that you’d be right. At least this much is sure – you won’t have to guess who produced any of the tracks on this album. The worksheets which follow the lesson (not present in K) are two-sided. It isn't stilted or unnatural to read the scripts, though once you're more experienced you might read the lesson yourself and put it into your own words instead. Everything is scripted for the parent, which is very helpful if you're a new homeschooler or not totally comfortable teaching math. I completely recommend it as a preschool math curriculum, or for a child you are not sure is ready for kindergarten even though they are turning five.Saxon K-3 is in a very easy-to-use, scripted format.Įach lesson begins with a "meeting", where the child practices things like recognizing a daily pattern, counting coins, skip-counting, fact memorization, charting the day's weather, etc.Īfter the meeting, there is a lesson that contains the day's new material. Like the recommendations I read, it really is very easy for kindergarten. If you get the manipulative kit (which I really recommend!) your child will have fun playing learning with pattern blocks, linking cubes, dominoes, teddy bear counters, geo boards, and more! Every lesson my kids ask to play with the manipulatives after the lesson is over. I was getting burned out planning all of our lessons (which I love to do, but there are only so many hours in the day), so I love being able to just glance at the lessons and grab the needed manipulatives right before we start. Everything is done with manipulatives, which I love! The lessons are scripted, which is a very welcomed break for me. There are no worksheets, no written work at all for your child. If this is your child’s first experience with math concepts, one a day (like it is written for) would be great. The lessons are short and very basic, so sometimes we do two in a day. Next, each lesson is followed with new teaching material. It practices counting skills (up to 31 which is helpful for my daughter), reading skills, patterns (each month has a new pattern to color in the dates with), and obviously calendar skills (days of the week, months of the year, etc.) When my son was three, I purposefully taught him these things, but I realized that I just hadn’t thought to do it with my daughter, so this is a really great teaching tool for her and great reinforcement time for my son. Basically we add a new date to the calendar and learn about new information on a calendar. Each lesson starts with the Meeting Book. The kids were thrilled when the box with all the manipulatives came in the mail, and we have all loved the fun, simple lessons. They said that the kindergarten curriculum was more on the preschool level, but because I wanted to use it with both my three and five-year-old, I thought it would be just right for us. We are still using Ray’s a couple days a week, but I wanted to incorporate something that would also provide practice in some classic kindergarten type skills (patterns, basic measuring, calendar reading, etc.) What about Kindergarten Saxon math?Īfter consulting a few classical homeschooling references, I decided to give Saxon a try. We have been using Ray’s Arithmetic and it has provided my son with a fantastic understanding of how addition and subtraction works. I have a five-year-old and a three-year-old and at the turn of the year I was feeling like I wanted to change up our math routine a bit. Sometimes when you add the number 1 in front of a noun, it transforms from -‘ uno,’ to ‘-un.’ For example: ‘ un gato’ (a cat.) Nevertheless, if you learn this accent, it will still be intelligible to how people in Spain speak ‘Castellano.’ Numeral Note: The pronunciations in the tables are Latin American Spanish accents, which differs from how people in Spain pronounce the names. Let’s see their translation and pronunciation. So, how do you say the numbers from 1 to 10 in Spanish? You will see how many similarities they have! Start from the basic cardinal numbers until you reach 10, then move your way to count higher numbers until you reach 1000.Ĭounting the numbers isn’t hard for someone who has learned English numbers. Remember when you learned the basic numbers in your native language? Now you have to do the same but in Spanish. ❼uáles numeros jugaste en la lotería? (What numbers did you play for the lottery?).❼uál es tu número de teléfono? (What is your phone number?). So, in today’s article, you will get a complete easy guide to learning the Spanish numbers from 1 to 1000 and start counting to avoid those challenging situations.Ĭardinal Spanish Numbers: An Easy Guide With Sounds How To Say ‘Numbers’ In Spanish Learning the numbers is one of the first steps to learning a new language, as we use them daily and everywhere. I understand how frustrating it can be when you are trying to communicate with a native speaker in their language. Now you are in the middle of a language barrier with many people waiting for their turn in line. You never got the chance to practice the numbers in Spanish! But after learning a few words such as ‘ hello‘ and ‘ you are welcome,’ you stopped learning more vocabulary. You find out that the seller only speaks Spanish. Imagine yourself at a local market in Latin America. So with JBL QuantumSPHERE 360, you can move your head naturally to pinpoint the exact source of sounds around you. the right ear to determine where the sound is located. The brain processes the differences between when a sound arrives at the left vs. Autopano Video Pro will give you the width and the height, but itll also give you the maximum size allowed with your output. Here are Autopano Pro/Giga 4. For example, if there’s a sound coming from in front of you, and you turn your head to the left, the sound source’s perceived location moves to your right ear-the sound stays locked in space as you move your head.Īlso, the human brain uses small head movements to distinguish if sound sources are behind or in front of us. I personally use PTGui, though I have not really used it enough to justify the cost yet (and my nodal ninja 3 is sitting mostly unused as well.). But with JBL QuantumSPHERE 360, if you rotate your head, the sound source’s perceived location stays in place because the head-tracking sensor compensates for your head movement. With typical headphones, when you move your head, the soundscape follows your movement. The new timeline of Autopano Video lets you split your 360 video, apply different settings on each part of the video and add transition effects. Q: What superpower(s) do you bring to this job?Ī: I think what I bring is a result of decades of experience working in this arena-an interest and ability to see the big picture and an understanding of where the various knobs and levers are for being able to effect change. It was really high above the ocean and swayed sickeningly as the ship sailed. I’m afraid of heights, and one of the things I made myself do is climb up the shrouds to the working platform on the mainmast. Q: What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done on purpose?Ī: When I was in college I did a semester-long program at Woods Hole and spent six weeks on a 100-foot-long topsail schooner in the Caribbean and Atlantic. I’m a fisheries biologist, so I always have a fish tank. A cat, Tess, and a splendid horse, Shiloh. I think we need to apply more science to the solutions-not just what they should be, but how to get them into the world.Ī: I do! A dog, Griffin, half German shepherd and half Dutch shepherd. Climate change is such an urgent and existential problem that I felt an obligation to stay engaged. I was drawn to Project Drawdown because it’s a science-based organization devoted to the solutions rather than just defining the problem. When I left NRDC, I was not quite ready to retire. I want to complement their expertise, which is very deep and very impressive, with some of my experience with how the policy arena works in its intersection with science.Ī: I have been a scientist working at the intersection of science and policy for more than 20 years. I went into it as a very deliberate professional decision after a number of years in academia because I wanted to be in a position to say, “This is what the science says, and based on what the science says this is what you should do.” Q: What is your role with the Project Drawdown Science team?Ī: I bring to Project Drawdown a very broad expertise and knowledge base, and I hope one of the values I offer is to help periodically identify some of the cross-connections and synergies that my teammates may not have yet considered. Here, Tina explains why Project Drawdown is the perfect next step in her long and illustrious career, describes how she once found herself clinging to a ship’s mast high above the ocean, vouches for the therapeutic value of punching clay, and more. Tina comes to Project Drawdown with more than two decades of experience in the environmental nonprofit arena, including with The Bay Institute and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). An environmental scientist with a background in cross-disciplinary research and engagement at the science/policy interface, she is passionate about applying science to benefit society. Tina Swanson joined the Drawdown Science team as a visiting scholar in June 2023. This article is the sixth in a series introducing the members of Project Drawdown’s science team. |
